(Sports) Taribo West Blasts Coach Keshi Over AFCON Failure @tj_shetade

taribo west

Taribo West claims Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi let success go to his head after he sensationally guided the Super Eagles to a third Africa Cup of Nations triumph in South Africa last year – and paid the price for “feeling very relaxed”.

Keshi, who captained the Eagles to victory at the Tunisia ’94 Africa Cup of Nations, capped off a successful   year (2013) by helping Nigeria seal their place at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Following the South Africa 2013 success, the former Anderlecht defender became the second man in history to win the Africa Cup of Nations as a player and a coach after Mohamed El Gohary of Egypt.

He made history as the first Nigerian to play in the country’s first appearance at the World Cup (USA’94) and progressed to become the only Nigerian to manage the team at the World Cup (Brazil 2014).

The ex-Strasbourg captain also became the first African coach to help qualify two different countries for different World Cups – 2006 and 2014.

Keshi guided Togo to the Germany 2006 World Cup, but he was sacked prior to the tournament and replaced by German coach Otto Pfister. He made history as the first African coach to pilot an African side to the World Cup Round of 16.

And Taribo, who has expressed his disappointment with Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea, maintains Keshi would have sustained success by helping the Eagles   book their ticket to the continental football showpiece if he hadn’t abandoned his coaching philosophy.

The Atlanta ’96 Olympic Games gold medallist fired a broadside at the players for the country’s 2-2 draw against South Africa in their Equatorial Guinea 2015 Group A qualifier in Uyo on November 19. The result ended Nigeria’s hopes of reaching Equatorial Guinea, as Congo picked up the group’s second ticket along with South Africa, who had sealed qualification for the competition after beating Sudan 2-1 in Durban on November 15.

“Keshi let success go to his head and the result is that we won’t be defending our title in Equatorial Guinea next year,” Taribo, who represented Nigeria at the USA ’94 and France ’98 World Cups, told our correspondent on the telephone during the week.

“When he started, he was hungry for success, hence he went for the home-based players who were equally hungry for success, and he was not bothered by the criticism over his decisions.

“The home-based players played a major role in our winning the Africa Cup of Nations last year.

“But Keshi felt very relaxed after winning the tournament. He changed and began to rely on (some) foreign-based players who are not good enough for the national team.

“Keshi should have continued with his policy. He should have invited more home-based players for the qualifiers.”

The former Inter Milan strongman questioned the players’ commitment to the national team and called for the invitation of new players to the side.

The ex-Eagles defender said, “The majority of the players are not ready to play football. Against South Africa, there was no tenacity and aggressiveness in our play. There was no bite upfront.

“(Azubuike) Egwekwe let us down. He should take the blame for the first goal. He opened the right side to expose the goalkeeper (Vincent Enyeama). I didn’t expect such a mistake from a player who has been in the national team for some time.

“(Kenneth) Omeruo committed a defensive blunder that could cost a player his career. He’s a good defender but he should have been rested for the game because he was not fit.

“Juwon (Oshaniwa) is a strong player but he gets confused each time he receives the ball.

“We need better defenders in the national team.   I believe we can find good defenders in the domestic league if we search for them.”

The 1998 UEFA CUP winner says the Eagles need another player to compete with   Chelsea midfielder Mikel Obi in the team.

Taribo said, “Mikel is a good player but we need to get the best out of him. He needs competition in his role and we must look for a player who can keep him on his toes.”

(Politics) Lagos PDP Crisis: Efforts to Disqualify Agbaje for Koro Will Not Work @tj_shetade

jimi

One of the governorship aspirants on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party in Lagos State, Mr. Jimi Agbaje, has described a suit seeking his disqualification from contesting the party primaries as “political mudslinging.”

An aspirant for the governorship ticket on the platform of the party, Mr. Nurudeen Balogun, had filed a suit with a Lagos High Court, seeking to prevent the party and the Independent National Electoral Commission from accepting Agbaje as a governorship aspirant or a candidate of the party.

Balogun argued that Agbaje only became a member of the party in July 2014.

He said Agbaje had neither spent the two years required by political aspirants to be eligible to contest nor received the party’s waiver for the supposed deficiency.

In his reaction to the suit, Agbaje, in a statement by his Director of Media and Publicity, Felix Oboagwina, denied that Agbaje only recently joined the PDP.

The statement quoted Agbaje as saying, “There is no truth in the allegation. No truth at all. He (Balogun) is not correct. For the sake of clarity, I joined the PDP in December 2011 and I joined the party at the ward level in line with the party’s constitution.

“I registered as a member of the party in my ward of residence, Ward B, Apapa, Lagos. The register is there for anybody to check. We expect that the petitioner, who had earlier sent a petition to the party, should have learnt that the party did not dignify his petition with a response because it lacked merit. The party even screened me and gave me a clearance certificate.

“Going by the registration date, Agbaje has crossed all hurdles for contesting in the PDP, whose constitution in Section 50(9), stipulates that aspirants must be card-carrying members of the party for a minimum of two years. However, people should appreciate the waiver provision in the party’s constitution.

“Balogun and his paymasters should know that politics has moved beyond people just creating problem where there is none and crying wolf unnecessarily.”

Also reacting to the allegation, the Director General of Agbaje’s Campaign Team, Alhaji Rahman Owokoniran, described the court case as pointless.

(Politics) Why Tambuwal Wants Court to jail IG for contempt @tj_shetade

tambuwa

According to http://www.punchng.com, speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Aminu Tambuwal, has asked a Federal High Court in Abuja to summon the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Suleiman Abba, to explain why he should not be jailed for disobeying the court order.

Tambuwal accused Abba of consistently disobeying the court order made on November 7, 2014, which directed parties in his substantive suit filed to stop his removal as a member and Speaker of the House of Representatives.

The Speaker had on Thursday filed the fresh application before Justice Ahmed Mohammed, alleging that Abba’s instruction to the men of the police to deny him access into the premises of the National Assembly preventing him from carrying out his lawful duties on November 20, amounted to flouting the court order.

He added that Abba, in further disrespect of the order, on November 26, appeared before the House of Representatives Committee on Police Affairs and told the members that he would not recognise him (Tambuwal) as the Speaker.

The grounds of Tambuwal’s application read in part, “On November 7, 2014, when this matter came up the 5th defendant (the Inspector General of Police) was represented in court by a learned senior counsel, Ade Okeaya-Inneh (SAN).

“The learned senior counsel for the 5th defendant informed the honourable court that the fifth defendant was duly served with the originating summons in this suit;

“At the hearing of the case on same day, the learned senior counsel representing the 5th defendant informed this honourable court that he undertook that the 5th defendant would not do anything to tamper with the res in this suit.

“This honourable court thereafter ordered that party should maintain status quo pending the determination of the substantive suit.

“Everybody except Suleiman Abba, Esq, who is the Inspector General of Police, has been obeying the order of this honourable court made on November 7, 2014.”

Tambuwal, through his lawyer, Mr. Lateef Fagbemi, who leads eight other Senior Advocates of Nigeria and many other lawyers, is therefore seeking “an order of the court directing Suleiman Abba, Esq, (Inspector General of Police) – the 5th defendant in this suit – to appear in person and to show cause why he should not be committed to prison for contempt of order of this honourable court ordering maintenance of status quo on November 7, 2014 and/or for acting in manners and ways which showed disrespect to court.”
