(Polls) Old Bendel Elders Endorses Kalu @Richard


The candidature of former governor of Abia State and Pro­gressive Peoples Al­liance (PPA) Senatorial can­didate for Abia North, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, has received the blessing of community leaders in the district.

The decision of the stake­holders was made known yes­terday shortly after a meeting of community leaders, youths and professionals drawn from Arochukwu, Bende, Ohafia, Isiukwuato and Ummunoche local government areas of the state. The meeting which was held at Umuneochi on Tues­day, had in attendance, promi­nent sons and daughters from the region including Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu (retd), Justice S.N. Imo, a (retired Chief Judge of Abia State), Rever­end Uma Ukpai, Chief Dan­iel Akwari (Osu Uzo), Jones Udeogu, Chief PaulUche, Chief Chukwudi Dinne, Amb. Austine Orji and Chief Kins Ekebuike.

Speaking to newsmen after hours of deliberations, Justice Imo from Bende local gov­ernment area explained that there was an urgent need for a prominent voice to represent the region at the National As­sembly. He noted that the an­tecedents of Dr. Orji Kalu is a major plus for him to give a robust representation to the region, after eight years of neglect. The eminent retired jurist advised other contenders for the senate seat to respect the will of the people by with­drawing from the race to sup­port the former governor.

Also speaking, Reverend Ukpai from Ohafia local gov­ernment area harped on the need for the people of the dis­trict to have one voice ahead of the forthcoming polls. He advised citizens and residents of Abia North to come out en masse to vote for the popular choice in the person of Dr. Orji Kalu, who he described as a bridge builder.

Corroborating the position of the earlier speakers, oth­ers who spoke at the meet­ing commended Kalu for his contributions to the region especially while he held sway as the state governor, adding that he remains a voice for the voiceless.

According to them, “we cannot afford to lose this gold­en opportunity to elect a cred­ible leader to represent us as legislative duties involve net­working and high- level lob­bying. We know Dr. Orji Kalu has a wide network of contacts that can be explored for the general interest of Abians.”
