Okonkwo: It’s Do Or Die Against Egypt

Super Eagles defender Chibuzor Okonkwo tells that he and his colleagues are well prepared to ensure Egypt fall in the first leg match of the 2017 AFCON qualifier in Kaduna, saying he believes so much in the technical ability of Coach Samson Siasia in ensuring Nigeria qualify for the tournament in Gabon

How do you feel being invited for the 2017 AFCON double header against Egypt?

I feel happy and excited because it has been a long time I played in the national team. I must say I am grateful to the coaches for the confidence they have in me. It is yet another opportunity for me to prove what I can do in the national team.

It has been long you played in the national team, what changes have you seen in the Super Eagles?

Yes, you are right it has been a long time but I am happy to be back to contribute to the team again. When I left the team, the Super Eagles were doing well and I am happy that I am returning to the team when the team is still doing well. It is a challenge for me and other players who have been away for some time to work hard and make sure we take the team to the next level.

What was the experience like playing in the Libyan League before returning to the NPFL?

Well, I want to thank God for the opportunity I had to play outside the country and I see it as an experience I needed to get better as a professional footballer. Libyan League is well organized just like we have in Nigeria now and it is very attractive in terms of money but when you look at the standard with what we have here, I will say our league is better because I can see lots of changes in our league now that will make it attractive to anybody outside the country. Personally, I think the difference is money and if we can just make our league more lucrative In terms of salaries, bonuses and other entitlements, many people from outside Nigeria will be willing to come and play here. I am happy that I played in Libya and gained some experience from there. You were part of Coach Samson Siasia team in 2008 and now you are back to play under the same coach, how would you describe him and what is that thing do you think makes him to command respect from his players?

He is an experience Coach and highly discipline in everything he does, he does not treat players any how or look down on players and he advises players on how they can be better instead of insulting them. Everyone that has passed through him will testify to what I am saying and that is why players will always want to go extra miles to play for him. The first time I played under him, I did not know much about him but when I got to know him, I saw one thing in him and that is his interest in players’ progress and that is why players always see him as a role model. Highly technical and he does not joke with training, if he expects you to do something in training and you did not get it right, he will insists until you get it right and also encourages players that they can be Messi, Ronaldo and other great players in the world.

EFCC Arraign FIRS Director Abumere Joseph Osagie today

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) will today March 10, 2016 arraign Abumere Joseph Osagie, a Deputy Director, Regional Tax Office of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), and his accomplice, Jamila Ojora on a two count charge bordering on criminal conspiracy and receipt of gratification.

One of the counts read, “Abumere Joseph Osagie and Jamila Ojora on or about January 27, 2016 in Abuja within the jurisdiction of this Honourable court, corruptly accepted the sum of N5,000,000.00 ( five million naira) from one Senator Ahmed Datti as a gift for having done a tax assessment for Baze University”.

Osagie and  Ojora had on January 27, 2016 allegedly approached Senator Datti, the Chancellor of Baze University, Abuja and gave him a tax assessment of N20,029, 496.00 through a letter of intent, which he paid.

“However, when he requested for the assessment certificate, they refused to oblige him. Instead they allegedly demanded for N5 million gratification. All pleas by him fell on deaf ears.

“Consequently, he petitioned the EFCC, and was advised to play along. Consequently, marked N5million was delivered to the director through Ojora in a sting operation. Ojora was arrested after she collected the N5 million. Her confession led to the arrest of Osagie.

The houses of the suspects were searched by operatives of the EFCC and documents recovered.

The two suspects are to be docked before Justice O. O. Goodluck of the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Maitama, Abuja.

Carragher picks Balotelli, Aquilani ,Diouf as his three worst Liverpool players signings

Phil Cole/GettyImagesMario Balotelli, El-Hadji Diouf and Alberto Aquilani have been picked as the worst players to have signed by Liverpool.

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher revealed that he’s praying for the Reds to sell flop striker Mario Balotelli to a Chinese Super League club this summer, picking the Italian as one of the three worst signings from his time at the club.

Asked for his opinion on Liverpool’s worst buy at a Daily Mail Question & Answer session, Carragher replied, “There’s been a few.”

Elaborating, the retired defender turned expert pundit explained, “El-Hadji Diouf has got to be up there. Alberto Aquilani would have to be up there as well.”

Aquilani was bought as a replacement for Real Madrid bound Xabi Alonso in the summer of 2009, but Liverpool never saw the best of the Italian midfielder. In fact, they rarely saw him full stop.

“We spent a lot of money on him,” Carra continued on Aquilani. “He was signed injured, he left injured and I can’t remember him not being injured.”

But it’s the signing of Balotelli from AC Milan in the summer of 2014 that really sticks in the mind, not least because he’s still technically owned by the Merseyside club. The transfer was described as a gamble by then Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers and it certainly backfired.

“I can’t believe we signed Mario Balotelli!” Carragher commented, clearly still shocked by it all well over 18 months later.

“The thing with Balotelli is everyone always says it’s the off-the-field antics, but I wouldn’t care if he was doing it on the pitch. People tell me he’s got talent but I can’t remember him having a good game.

“I’m praying with all the money in the Chinese Super League that someone is going to buy him after his loan. I don’t think anyone in the Premier League will take him. He has to be No. 1 with Aquilani and Diouf.”Jamie McDonald/GettyImages
