Update on Ex-Minister kidnapped

‘Anisulowo taken away on bike’Latest on Senator Iyabo Anisulowo has it that the commander of the vigilance group in Igbogila, Ogun State, Oluyemi Zacchaeus, has said Senator Iyabo Anisulowo, who was kidnapped on Wednesday, was sighted hooded on a bike.

According to Zacchaeus, the information came from Obalado, a community near the kidnap scene.

The former Minister of State for Education was abducted on her way from her farm, according to her younger brother, Kola Popoola. Also abducted was her security aide.

An aide of the former minister, Wasiu Afonja, spoke of his experience.

Afonja, who claimed to be driving when the incident occurred, said a four-man gang attacked them.

He said the kidnappers waylaid them about a kilometre from the farm.

“We were attacked  in a ‘commando-like’ fashion. Our phones were collected before Mama was taken  away.

“They ordered the three of us, who were with her, to lie down. They beat us with machetes.

“The men spoke in English and Yoruba. Mama kept asking them what they wanted but they didn’t answer.

“It was later in the evening that we discovered the abandoned vehicle at Iganokoto,” Afonja said.

An eyewitness, Damola Akinwande, said the gunmen prevented them from looking into their faces.

Governor Ibikunle  Amosun and the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 2, Bala Hassan, have assured that the victim would be rescued safely.

They spoke at the senator’s Ilaro home yesterday. The governor said the army, police, operatives of the Department of State Security Service (DSS), paramilitary agencies, vigilance group, farmers and hunters are involved in the search and rescue efforts.

He said: “Because of the security nature of the incident, we can’t tell you what we have done but you can be rest assured that everybody is on it. I have to thank our people too.

“We’ll get her safely. I know she would be troubled but we know the Lord is in charge. And to those who did this, we are ready for them.

“We’ve interfaced with those who were with her and they have narrated how it happened. And I’m sure that all the security agencies will do their work. The bits and pieces they’ve gathered, they will work on it. I want to reassure our people that Ogun State is very safe.”

Hassan said: “The kidnap is most unfortunate. I want to assure the people of Ogun and Lagos states that we are going to get to the root of this issue. She will be released safely and the perpetrators will be punished.

The victim’s husband, Aderemi, who came in from Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, said he was satisfied with the government’s response and action.

“I thank Governor Amosun for what he has done and pray God to continue to strengthen him and give him more wisdom and knowledge to continue to steer the ship of the state,” Anisulowo said.

PDP defies Southwest chieftains, zones chairmanship to Northeast

Ali Modu SheriffAccording to trending news, a defiant Peoples Democratic Party on Thursday assigned the position of its national chairman to the Northeast geopolitical zone, ignoring threats of mass defection by some of its chieftains who insisted the position be zoned to the Southwest region.

The decision was reached at the party’s 70th National Executive Council meeting held on Thursday at its national secretariat in Abuja.

The decision, which was made by the party’s zoning committee led by Akwa Ibom State’s Emmanuel Udom, has now cleared the way for Ali-Modu Sheriff, the national chairman of the party, to contest for a full term at the party’s national convention next month.

The newly adopted zoning arrangements as contained in a statement signed by Olisa Metuh, the party’s spokesman, are as follows:

i. National Chairman – North-East
ii. Deputy National Chairman – South-South
iii. National Secretary – South-West
iv. Deputy National Secretary – North-Central
v. National Legal Adviser – North-West
vi. Deputy National Legal Adviser – South-South
vii. National Treasurer – South-South
viii. Deputy National Treasurer – North-West
ix. National Financial Secretary – North-Central
x. Deputy National Financial Sec. – South-East
xi. National Woman Leader – North-West
xii. Deputy National Woman Leader – South-South
xiii. National Auditor – South-West
xiv. Deputy National Auditor – North-East
xv. National Publicity Secretary – South-West
xvi. Deputy National Publicity Sec. – North-Central
xvii. National Organizing Secretary – South-East
xviii. Deputy National Organizing Sec. – North-Central
xix. National Youth Leader – South- East
xix. Deputy National Youth Leader – North-West

Mr. Sheriff, appointed in February to complete the tenure of Adamu Mu’azu, has been pushing to hold on to the position amid opposition from mainly southwest PDP leaders.

Thursday’s decision highlights the unwavering influence of the party’s governors’ caucus, which has remained Mr. Sheriff’s most supportive bloc within the party.

The party’s Board of Trustees, which took a hard stance against him before today, gave a backhanded support to the decision.

Walid Jibrin, the BoT chairman, was present at the meeting, although several other members were not.

The party’s national secretary, Wale Oladipo, told PREMIUM TIMES that some of the absent members sent in a letters and apologies.

“The BoT is part of NEC and some of the BoT members that didn’t attend sent in letters to explain and apologise, Mrs. Maina Waziri is one of them,” Mr. Oladipo said.

Mr. Jibrin, a senator, urged all aggrieved members of the party to eschew their discontentment in order not to leave the party fractured.

“Many of us who are founding members of the PDP will not leave the PDP and the PDP will never die. We will continue to be in PDP whatever mistake is there we might be there to correct it and make our contribution.

“Leaving PDP is not the answer, I will like to appeal to everyone who intends to leave the PDP to stop that. We must unite and all work together in order to build PDP. PDP is within a very good marking and I do not think I see anything wrong with PDP,” Mr. Jibrin said.

“Every party has its own problems and we should use our own problems positively. I’m sure soon the whole problem in PDP will be resolved.”

Doyin Okupe, a former presidential aide, said the party had “entered the road to perdition” with the decision.

Mr. Okupe, who has become one of the most vociferous voices against Mr. Sheriff in recent weeks, had said he and other party leaders from the southwest agreed to defect if the southwest is denied the chairmanship position.

“The PDP has now entered the road to perdition with the appointment of someone who’s only known public image is that he’s a Boko Haram sponsor,” Mr. Okupe said. “This is shameful, and I hope all Nigerians, especially loyal members of the party, reject this unfortunate development.”

Mr. Okupe also added that the decision of the PDP’s NEC, which is the party’s highest decision-marking organ, to circumvent the zoning arrangement of the party in order to impose Mr. Sheriff on the members is another slippery slope that the party is unlikely to escape.

“This leaders of the party in NEC decided to ignore the zoning arrangement of the party so that they could impose Mr. Sheriff on all members, this is a very dangerous cliff that the PDP can never escape,” Mr. Okupe said. “It is over for the party.”

But Mr. Oladipo said all those threatening defection are only exercising their right to free speech, as he did not expect them to leave the party because doing so is “not an easy decision”.

“We’re in a democracy and they have the right to talk anything they want, but I can tell you confidently that they have no intention of leaving the PDP,” Mr. Oladipo said. “It’s easier said than done.”

Yobo post match: NFF want players to die before celebrating them, Yobo deserves more respect-Emenike

Emenike-celebrates-fener-goal7Nigeria ex-striker Emmanuel Emenike has blast Nigeria Football Federation over not showing respect for Nigeria players.

If playing football is easy, the NFF officials should jump on and where jersey to play for the country and see how difficult it is to sacrifice your life for the country, according to Emmanuel Emenike who didnt support NFF for planning Yobo testimonial match same day Nigeria has a match.

It is “an insult” the decision of the Nigeria Football Federation to fix another match on the same day Joseph Yobo’s testimonial match will be played.

Nigeria will play a friendly against Mali in France on May 27, the same day the Yobo testimonial will be played  in Port Harcourt.

West Ham forward  Emenike said the NFF’s  decision  was disrespectful to the former Super  Eagles skipper.

“If we are still on the same page of rebranding football, we should have the common sense of celebrating our heroes so that the younger ones in the team will live by example,” Emenike told AfricanFootball.com.

“Yobo deserves the honour and everybody has to turn up to celebrate him, but it’s unfortunate that it’s the NFF who are now looking like the obstacle to this testimonial. The  Eagles players are the ones who want to play the Yobo match, tell me how that will be possible if they are in for another national assignment on that same day.

“We should change our mentality in order to reach greater heights of football in the world. Yobo was one of the best in Africa during his playing days, he’s a known name all over the world and he should be celebrated in a bigger way. The younger ones are watching, let’s change things.”

The 2013 AFCON winner and top scorer added, “I understand that the Joseph Yobo match will be played the same day Super Eagles have a match against Mali or whoever, is that the way it’s done in other countries?

“I think some people are just unserious about our football. This is a top match and Yobo has written a letter to the NFF before now, so why are they playing this international match also?

“We should also understand that we don’t respect our past heroes, we don’t appreciate the past, we only want people to come and die and forget about their life.”

Out of the N23.3 billion distributed by Fidelity Bank, Gesila Khan, now REC for Cross River  got N185.8million . Fidelia Omoile (Electoral Officer in Isoko-South Local Government Area of Delta State) got N112.5 million ; Uluochi Obi Brown INEC’s Administrative Secretary in Delta State got N111,500,000. A  former Deputy Director  of INEC in Cross River State, Edem Okon Effanga was paid N241,127,000 and the Head of Voter Education in INEC in Akwa Ibom, Immaculata Asuquo also got N214,127,000.
