The Truth About Nigeria’s Power Sector During the Jonathan Years

My attention has been drawn to the story ‘Obasanjo, Yar’Adua, Jonathan wasted N11tn on electricity –SERAP’ published most prominently in The Punch newspapers on August 10, 2017 and less prominently in other papers.

While I cannot speak for others, I can certainly say that as touching former President Goodluck Jonathan, the story is false and is the fruit of the laziness of the researchers who could have taken advantage of the Freedom of Information Act that Dr. Jonathan signed into law in May, 2011 to get records and data from relevant government ministries, departments and agencies that would have given them a fuller picture instead of the narrow view they have.

Former President Jonathan could not have wasted ₦11 trillion or any other amounts of money for the simple reason that he was the Nigerian President who privatized the Power Sector beginning on August 26, 2010 when he launched the roadmap to power sector reforms and culminating on October 16, 2012 when the winning bids were announced for the sale of power generating and distributing companies.

SERAP may do well to remember that on Monday the 30th of September 2013, at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, Former President Jonathan successfully handed over the bulk of Nigeria’s Power Infrastructure to successful private sector bidders after they had made payments for the assets they acquired.

At that event, he said “I congratulate our new owners who have taken over the engines and cables that are expected to drive not just the electricity industry but also the socio-economic well-being of the nation”.

In total, the Power Holding Company of Nigeria was split into six generation and 11 distribution firms, all sold separately, for about $2.5 billion for which the Jonathan administration received much deserved praise.

In fact, rather than wasting money, the Jonathan administration generated money for the federation from the sale of these assets which were seen to be transparent and followed global best practices.

Between May 6th 2010 when he was first sworn in as President to May 29, 2015 when he handed over power, the budget for the ministry of power under Dr. Jonathan was not up to ₦400 billion in total for the simple reason that his administration had succeeded in transferring most of Nigeria’s power assets, liabilities and personnel from the public sector to the private sector.

As such, it is evidently clear that any allegations that the Jonathan government wasted trillions is not a well thought out allegation at best and is a figment of the imagination of the makers at worse.

I do hope those papers which published this false report against the person of former President Jonathan and the administration that he led will be honorable enough to set the records straight for posterity.

May God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

My re-arrest’ll quicken actualisation of Biafra – Nnamdi Kanu

Kanu also said that nobody can restrict his movement in any part of the country and that he is free to go to any part of Nigeria, including Lagos, if he so wishes.

According to the IPOB leader who spoke in Umuahia, nobody can stop him from visiting Lagos State if he wants to visit there, saying he was not bothered by threats by some elements that his safety would not be guaranteed in Lagos.

If you arrest me, Biafra will come even quicker than we anticipate. I am not afraid of being arrested. I have been there before and if need be, I will also be there again.

I will be very happy if they re-arrest me. If we are hoping for 90% compliance with the boycott of Anambra State Governorship election, my arrest will make the compliance 100 %.

But why will I be re-arrested and nobody is going to arrest Tanko Yakassai or Ango Abdulahi because of what they have been saying? Is it because they are Fulani? They own Nigeria? They are immuned to arrest? Is arrest only meant for Biafrans and not for Fulani?

Who will arrest Lawal Daura of DSS for flouting court order to release Bright Chimezie Isinwa of IPOB? The Fulanis say whatever they like and go free and nobody holds them accountable because they own Nigeria”, Kanu said.

According to him, “I go to anywhere I want to go. I don’t listen to threats. They motivate me rather than dampen my spirit. That thing people say I cannot do is what I love to do. When the time comes, I will go to Lagos if I have to go to Lagos”.

I have friends with connections in Lagos, Fani Fayode is my friend and he is in Lagos. If I try to visit him in Yoruba land, then I must see him in Lagos”.

Kanu also denied promoting hate speech as being accused of by his critics, saying that condemnation of the injustices in Nigeria or the agitation for self- rule does not in any way amount to hate speech.

“I completely disagree with them. They are the pioneers of hate speech. Go through the text of speeches made by Ango Abdulahim, Tanko Yakassia or the ones made by one Abubarkar. Are those ones not hate speeches? Unfortunately, I blame the deplorable state of education in Nigeria because they don’t know what hate speech is all about.

“Does asking for self determination amount to hate speech? Or asking for referendum hate speech? Where did they go to school? I think they need to invest more in education because self determination is no way equal to war or hate speech”, Kanu said.

Trump’s threat a ‘load of nonsense,’-North Korea’s

North Korea’s military has called President Donald Trump’s threat warning of “fire and fury” a “load of nonsense.”

In a statement released today through the Korean Central News Agency, a state-run media outlet, Gen. Kim Rak Gyom, commander of the Strategic Force of the Korean People’s Army, said Trump’s comments fail to grasp the ongoing situation, calling the U.S. president a “guy bereft of reason” and saying he is “extremely getting on the nerves” of the country’s army. Only absolute force can work on him,” the statement reads.

The statement added that the country is still examining a possible strike on waters near Guam “to signal a crucial warning to the U.S.” North Korea previously said Tuesday in response to Trump’s remarks it was considering a strike on the U.S. territory in the western Pacific that would create “an enveloping fire.” Guam is home to a key Air Force base.

The statement concluded by saying that the country will be “closely watching the speech and behavior of the U.S.”

Speaking from Bedminster, New Jersey, on Tuesday, Trump used strong language to caution North Korea against making any further threats against the U.S.

“North Korea best not make any more threats to the United States. They will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen. He has been very threatening — beyond a normal statement — and as I said, they will be met with fire, fury and, frankly, power the likes of which the world has never seen before,” Trump said, referring to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

On Wednesday, U.S. Secretary of Defense James Mattis added to the increasingly heated rhetoric, urging North Korea’s leader to “take heed” of the United Nations Security Council’s “unified voice,” referring to recent sanctions issued against the nation. Mattis also called for the country to “cease any consideration of actions that would lead to the end of its regime and the destruction of its people.”

Members of the U.S. intelligence community believe that North Korea’s nuclear capabilities may be more advanced than initially thought and the country might have developed the technology to miniaturize a nuclear warhead so it can be placed inside an intercontinental ballistic missile, a U.S. official told ABC News on Tuesday. The Washington Post first reported the news, citing a July 28 report by the Defense Intelligence Agency about North Korea’s capabilities.

APC behind Ozubulu Church attack-Obiano

Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress,  APC, of trying to plunge the state into crisis in order to use its federal might to impose a state of emergency. The governor who was reacting to reports credited to the APC National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, where he called on the former to “write his hand over notes and start preparing to vacate office,” said such statement lacked democratic spirit. Governor Obiano, who reacted to calls on him by the APC national chairman to write his hand-over note, said  “No doubt this statement, which we consider as coming from not just Chief Oyegun but from the ruling APC is a clear threat to Nigeria’s democracy and security in Anambra State. “We have it on good authority that they have been working at various options including an attempt to foment insecurity in the state to pave way for a state of emergency as a prelude to their take-over. What this requires is that Anambra people and Nigerians in general, especially lovers of democracy and good governance should be alert. “It has again re-affirmed the undemocratic nature of many APC apostles and this is unfortunate for our nation, especially at this critical point in our history when democratic tenets should be nurtured,” he said. In a statement in Abuja by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Strategic Communications, Prince Oliver Okpala, the governor accused the APC national chairman of lacking integrity and moral ground to speak on good governance, saying he does not have such record. “Oyegun’s declaration that his rudderless party will take over Anambra is also an unfortunate exposure of that undemocratic spirit and cancer that has befallen the APC. If what we practice is true democracy, where democracy is the government of the people, for the people and by the people, Oyegun could not have made such an unguarded utterance. “If unchecked, APC’s negative political appetite will mean that the up-coming elections and the inherent display of the power of choice by the electorate will all be an exercise in futility. For them , since they control the Federal Government which is in charge of the crucial agencies such as INEC , the Police and other security agencies,   then their sinister motive would be easily achieved. “The naked truth is that if anything untoward happens in Anambra, the world should hold Oyegun responsible. Power is given by God and must not be sought for by killing and devilish orchestration. A destructive means cannot bring about a constructive end. “Democracy is about the people, and its powers and legitimacy should flow from the ballot box, not the barrel of the gun, even as seemingly unattractive as that is. So, Oyegun and the APC must accept that reality, and refrain from their evil plot to forcefully remove Obiano from office come  November 18 governorship election in Anambra State. “His declaration that ‘APC must take over Anambra’ is a signal that they are bent on forcefully overturning the will of the people who are the true custodians of democracy. Sadly, this is not the first time APC chieftains are making such calamitous declarations. Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State had earlier said so when he inaugurated an illegal, thuggery gang which he said he will use to override the will of the electorate in Anambra, as if Anambra was a battlefield. “Granted, as Oyegun said, Anambra is crucial to their plot of making inroads into the South East, but must that be achieved through undemocratic means which often leads to bloodletting and mayhem?” The statement also recalled how the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige had made similar remarks, saying “the implication of this is that the APC has contrived a grave plot to undermine the will of the Anambra electorate, to forcefully take over the governance of Anambra State. “Instead of working genuinely to win the love of the people of Anambra as required in a democratic setting, the APC leaders who know that  Obiano has performed creditably are rather working out sinister plots to unseat him.” He however called on all Nigerians, especially the Anambrans to be vigilant and prepare against “any evil plot by the Oyegun-led APC to perpetrate rigging in the forthcoming election.”

Liverpool rejects €100M Barca bid for Coutinho

The Anfield club has turned out a large offer for the Brazilian playmaker and are not backing down from their stance that he is not for sale

Liverpool have rejected a €100 million offer from Barcelona for Philippe Coutinho, Goal can confirm.

The Brazilian playmaker’s future at Anfield has been the source of constant rumours for much of the summer with the Blaugrana reportedly making an earlier bid for him.

While originally thought to be a move to help retain the services of Neymar, the latter’s exit to PSG for €222m last week has turned a potential Coutinho signing into part of the Catalan club’s plan to replace the departed superstar.

Rumours have floated that Barcelona were close to a deal for the 25-year-old Coutinho and that representatives for the Liga side were on their way to Liverpool to finalise a deal.

However, Reds manager Jurgen Klopp has insisted multiple times over the summer the player is not for sale , and appears not to have been moved by Barcelona’s latest offer.

Coutinho signed a new five-year deal during the 2016-17 season which does not include a release clause.

The Reds insist they do not need a face-to-face sit down to reiterate that Coutinho is not on the market , a stance they’ve already made abundantly clear.

Claims that the playmaker has prepared poorly in pre-season falls flat in the face of evidence to the contrary.
