Image result for Gernot RohrNigeria Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr has revealed that Nigeria’s 2-0 bashing by debutants Madagascar in their final group game at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2019 inspired his side progress to the quarterfinal. The Franco-German could not hide his excitement after Super Eagles defeated the Indomitable Lions 3-2 in the round of 16 cracker at Alexandria Stadium redeem their image. Nigeria went into the half-time break on the back-foot after two strikes from Stephane Bahoken and Clinton N’Jie canceled out Odion Ighalo’s 19th minute opener .

However, Ighalo and Alex Iwobi’s second half goals in the 63rd and 66th minute saw Nigeria reclaim the lead, to claim a 3-2 win at the blast of the final whistle. Speaking moments after the game, Rohr, noted that the victory over the defending champions was the best way to react after the embarrassing defeat against Madagascar.

“I know my team and I know that since last Sunday they want to really do well and win for all the players who made some mistakes,” the 66-year-old Rohr was quoted as saying to journalists by Goal after the game. “We lost the game we never had to lose against Madagascar, but it was a lesson of humility and also the motivation to do really well [against Cameroon]. “We wanted to finish first in the group but we could not. The most important for us was to win this match of the last 16. It happened when I was in Gabon, we won the three matches as host country and we lost in the quarterfinals after 120 minutes via penalties. So sometimes it’s better to have one loss in the group stage and then win in the knockout games,” noted Rohr, who was criticized after Nigeria’s below-the-par performance in the group stage. He further noted that Nigeria’s comeback after the break against Cameroon was a step in the right direction as he plans for the next round. Image may contain: 1 person, outdoor
