Wenger Expects Lacazette emulate Ibrahimovic

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger hopes new signing Alexandre Lacazette can replicate the kind of form Zlatan Ibrahimovic had at Manchester United last season.

The Swedish striker who was signed from Paris Saint Germain (PSG) scored 28 English Premier League goals for the Red Devils but was released after he copped an injury towards the end of last term.

As Arsenal get set to welcome Leicester City in the opening match of the 2017/2018 campaign on Friday night, the former Lyon striker has been on the spotlight after arriving north London for £52million, a record signing for the Gunners.

“With Lacazette, it’s simple. He is an intelligent player. We have a game backed on mobility and technique and I think he can integrate that well,” Wenger is quoted by

“After that, we get the efficiency. His record in France is to score one in 80 minutes. If he can maintain that record that would be ideal for us. As a game is in 90 that would guarantee you a goal.

“Goal-scoring record is not necessarily transferable from the French League to the English league, that’s for sure.

“But you could say that Ibrahimovic transferred an identical amount of goals from France to England. So that’s the target Lacazette should set.”

“I know him for a long time. In France, you have Paris that produces maybe 60 or 70% of players. With the suburbs they go south and west.

“After Paris, you have Lyon, which is a special place in France as they have their own mentality. They don’t like to move away, usually.

“They produce their own players, the players who grew up around Lyon, like Fekir, Lacazette, Gonalons. They all stay in Lyon. They usually like to stay there. They are players with a special mentality and I did not know whether they wanted to move or not.

“Does he want to go abroad or not? It is a very specific French players at Lyon.

Wenger admitted he is open to bringing more players in the current window but stressed the difficulty in managing those at his disposal at the moment.

“We are still open [for more signings]. But of course at the moment I have 33 players [in the squad] and it’s very difficult to manage, on a daily basis, such a high number.

Wenger also talked about the situation with league champions Chelsea who they defeated via penalties on the FA Community Shield on Sunday.

“Maybe, yes, he has the opposite problem. But if you look at the number of players on loan, they can call a few back.

“I have sympathy for him [Conte]. But do I feel sorry for Chelsea because they don’t have enough players? Then, no.”

Lacazette reveals inspiration behind 'dream' Arsenal switch

The French striker claims he will realise a childhood dream by playing for the Gunners and trying to emulate his country’s greatest

Alexandre Lacazette hopes to follow in the footsteps of Thierry Henry at Arsenal after becoming the Premier League club’s record signing.

Lacazette completed his much-anticipated switch from Lyon to Emirates Stadium on Wednesday for a fee reported to be in the region of €60million.

The 26-year-old France striker has long followed Arsenal’s progress from his homeland due to the exploits of Henry and other Les Bleus stars in London.

“I am, of course. delighted and very proud too because Arsenal is a legendary club,” Lacazette, who admires the club’s “stability” under Arsene Wenger, told the Gunners’ official website.

“Throughout my childhood, thanks to Thierry Henry and other French players, I always dreamed of playing for this club so that dream has been fulfilled.

“[I like] Arsenal’s past – I like clubs with a history. Also the fact that the manager has been here for a while shows it is a stable club, which I like.

“In addition, there are quite a few French players here, which makes it easier to settle in.

“In my opinion, Arsenal is also the club that plays the best football in England so I really wanted to play here.

Lacazette arrives in the Premier League after a prolific return of 37 goals across 45 matches in 2016-17 helped Lyon to fourth place in Ligue 1 and a run to the semi-finals of the Europa League.

“When I play I like to use my pace to link up with my team-mates. As a forward, I like to score goals of course, but that not all that I’m about,” he said when discussing his style of play.

“Every time I take a shot at goal it’s because I believe I can score. I don’t just shoot for the sake of it.

“I also try to keep as calm as possible. All that is achieved by a lot of hard work in training.”

Lacazette added: “I want to give 100 per cent in every match. I want to show I’m worthy of the shirt. I want to do everything I can to make sure we win titles.”

Transfer News: Lacazette set for Arsenal move

Arsenal in advanced talks for €55m-rated Lyon striker Lacazette

While the Ligue 1 club do not want to part with the sought-after attacker, the Frenchman is believed to want to leave.

Arsenal are in advanced talks for €55 million-rated Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette, Goalunderstands, although no fee has yet been agreed.

Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas has confirmed talks have been held for Lacazette at a media conference introducing the signing of Mariano Diaz from Real Madrid, but said no deal has been reached.

“There are exchanges and it’s true that Arsenal are pressing,” Aulas told RMC. “But the moment has not come. I am not ready to give an agreement in the current conditions to Arsenal.”

The Gunners are €4m away from Lyon’s valuation of Lacazette, 26, and negotiations look set to continue over the coming days as Arsenal hope to seal the deal for the France international.

Alexandre Lacazette Lyon Europa League

It is believed Lacazette wants to leave Lyon and was set on a move to Atletico Madrid until the Spanish club’s transfer ban was upheld, preventing a move until January at the earliest.

Any move could end up costing the Gunners €55m (£48m/$63m) plus add-ons. There have been rumours of a swap deal involving Olivier Giroud but Aulas suggested it had not been discussed.

Instead, Diaz, who signed Friday after a reported €8m move, is expected to be Lacazette’s replacement.

The Gunners hope to keep Giroud, although they are prepared to let Lucas Perez – who joined last August but scored only once in 11 Premier League matches – leave the north London club this summer.
