The All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) Nigeria Stakeholders’ Conference with the theme: “Harnessing Our Music Potential for Africa’s Development” held on Tuesday, April15, 2014, at the Four Points by Sheraton, Victoria Island Lagos, Nigeria. The well-attended event was geared towards heralding the biggest music awards on the continent billed to hold in Nigeria on October 25, 2014.
According to AFRIMA Co-Producer/Regional Director, East Africa, Mr. Mike Strano, AFRIMA is a narrative of African music, culture and heritage on the global stage. “It is fashioned as a medium to enhance African music industry’s bottom line and communicate harmony in Africa’ with the mandate of producing an international platform to celebrate our cultural heritage and values, rewarding up and coming as well as established talent, and celebrating sustainable growth of the African music industry as a contributor to national and continental economies”, Strano said during his opening presentation at the event.
The Special Guest of Honour at the event was Director, Entertainment and Creative Services, Federal Ministry of Culture, Tourism and National Orientation, Mrs. Grace Gekpe, while the Keynote Speaker was Nigeria entertainment industry impresario, Mr Dayo Adeneye (D1).
Mrs. Gekpe, in her exhilarating speech, reaffirmed the support of the Federal Ministry of Culture, Tourism and National Orientation for the AFRIMA project and stated that she was also delighted to be involved in the project in her responsibility as the director of the new department.
“The Ministry is enthusiastic about AFRIMA because of what the project has set out to accomplish. We are aware that it intends to celebrate and honour the creative industry talents in Africa and to also enhance the business aspect of the industry thereby increasing the GDP of not just Nigeria but other countries in Africa”, she stated.
The keynote speaker, Mr. Adeneye, while delivering his address on the event theme: “Harnessing Our Music Potential for Africa’s Development”, praised the AFRMA team for their courage to embark on the continental project which is not only positioned to reward talents in music but export Africa’s music culture and creative economy potential to the rest of the world.
Anchored by Olumuyiwa Osinuga, the recording artiste popularly known as Nomoreloss, there was a panel discussion and a Q&A session where members of the International Committee of AFRIMA fielded queries from the guests.
Veteran Reggae artist, Blackky asked how AFRIMA intended to deal with integrity issues and voting. In response, AFRIMA Executive Producer, Mike Dada, explained that the 525 members of the Academy of AFRIMA to conduct the adjudication process will be selected from among renowned music scholars, journalists/critics, disc jockeys, Vee Jays, record label owners in Africa. He also gave some insight to the format of entry submission and voting process, adding that the call for entry would be announced at a later date.
The event had opened with a rendition of the National Anthem by female singer, Essence, after which a minute silence was observed in honour of Zara Gretti, the 28-year-old female singer, who succumbed to Multiple Sclerosis on March 28, 2014. More amazing music and spoken word performances were to come from GT da Guitarman and Wana Wana respectively at the conference that was a confluence of government officials, music associations’ leaders, label owners, media owners, veteran journalists, top contemporary artistes and more.
Present at the event were musical exponents like veteran entertainment personality, Olisa Adibua; flutist and ex-president, Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria, PMAN, Tee Mac Iseli; choreography/dance icon, Yeni Kuti; music blogger, Noble Igwe; Ghetto soldier, Daddy Showkey, Fuji music icon, Adewale Ayuba; Founder, Nigezie TV, Femi Aderibigbe (Kwame); celebrated DJs Jimmy Jatt and Humility; artiste manager, Efe Omoriegbe; Joke Jaiyesimi, Obiwon Obiora, Essence, Chi Chi Africa and Tosin Martins, among others.
