One Chadian soldier was killed and another nine were wounded in Gambaru, the scene of regular attacks by the group in recent months. There was no immediate independent verification of the Chadian army’s announcement, reports a news agency.
Chad’s military also claimed to have seized large quantities of small arms and ammunition and two pick-up trucks on Tuesday.
Niger, Cameroon and Chad have launched a regional military campaign to help Nigeria defeat the Boko Haram insurgency, which aims to carve an Islamic emirate out of northeastern Nigeria.
Chad deployed troops last month in support of Cameroonian efforts to stop repeated cross-border raids by the fighters, whose operations increasingly threaten Nigeria’s neighbours.
The African Union last month authorised the creation of the regional force, which will also include Benin, and is pushing for a United Nations Security Council mandate for the operation.

Founder of the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC), Dr Fredrick Fasehun has said that the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the March 28 presidential election, Muhammadu Buhari will never rule Nigeria again.
He said that the former military dictator lacks the credentials and temperament to rule the nation at this time of her history.
The OPC leader made the remarks on Monday when he received the Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta and chairman, Presidential Amnesty Programme, Kingsley Kuku in his office in Lagos.
He said that unlike President Jonathan who is a true democrat, the APC candidate’s administration would be a nightmare. Kuku said that Nigerians are wiser now and would not vote for a dictator and assured that the people of the South West would support Jonathan because he is a true democrat.
His words: “Remember that few hours after he came to power, he said that all political office holders at that time should report to the nearest Police station. Some of them did not go back to their homes again as they died in detention. Some of them went blind. Some that were released following the protest of people, returned home and died.
“And that is the man who wants to come back again to rule Nigeria. We are Nigerians and Nigeria belongs to all of us. He will not rule Nigeria again. In those times, it was very easy to intimidate us but this time, nobody can intimidate us. Nigeria has changed and we now know our rights. Jonathan has taught us our rights. Jonathan is an addict to democracy. He is the kind of leader that Nigeria needs now.
“Buhari will never rule Nigeria again. I personally do not want to witness a Buhari again because eight years of his administration would be a nightmare. We do not want him. He retired about 30 years ago, what good has he done for himself. What business has he done all these years to direct the economy of Nigeria? Where is the experience?
“He said he will probe corruption and when you look around and see all those following him, you begin to wonder how he wants to fight corruption. Tell me any of those following him that is not corrupt. Let Jonathan be rest assured that this part of the country will fully support him”.
Speaking earlier, Kuku thanked Dr Fasehun for his contribution to the struggle for entrenching democracy in the nation and for supporting President Jonathan in his effort to transform the country.
He commended the spirit of consistency among people of the South West zone, urging them to support Jonathan like they did in 2011.
His words: “They said that Jonathan’s government is corrupt and we ask them, what is the meaning of corruption? How can somebody say he is coming to fight corruption and he is moving about with very corrupt people? Do you want to fight yourselves? Buhari is not corrupt but he inhales the odour of corruption.
“I do not know where he is going with these elements we see around him. Somebody was a Speaker on the platform of PDP and later became governor on the same platform for about seven years.
“That person defects to APC and he becomes a saint. Jonathan is not corrupt. Somebody has bought the whole of Lagos and has become PLC in the name of an individual who is following Buhari around and he is not corrupt.
“Under Jonathan, the EFCC has got about 65 high profile cases, prosecuted them and convicted all of them. The only problem with our administration and Jonathan has said so himself is that we are so much underpublicized.
“If Buhari and the APC people are very patriotic, your people are dying and you say you have the solution to the Boko Haram insurgency, why are you keeping it until you take over power?”

For a country like Nigeria which is undoubtedly Africa’s most populous nation, it’s ‘brand’ of politics has never ceased to be intriguing. With over 400 ethnic groups, that practice different religions, politics in Nigeria especially during an election period has always been a combination of intrigues, twists, maneuvering and tension. The most recent is the feud between former President Olusegun Obasanjo and President Goodluck Jonathan.
The political events that have continued unfolding even before this year’s general elections has created much frenzy and heated debate in the political sphere of the country. Besides the usual salvos fired between the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC), the event which has created mixed reactions and puzzled political watchers is the onslaught of former President Olusegun Obasanjo against President Goodluck Jonathan.
The former president who can best be described as the benefactor of President Goodluck Jonathan, given that he was instrumental to his (Jonathan) emergence as the Vice President to the late President Umaru Yar’Adua has been at loggerheads with President Jonathan, in the past one year. The former President has not spared any opportunity any formal or informal gathering presented to blast President Jonathan over what he described as his inept leadership. He had lampooned the President, accusing him of shielding corrupt politicians and running down the economy. In an open letter which he released last year, he accused President Jonathan of empowering the likes of Buruji Kashamu, who is a leader in the South West zone of PDP. He alleged that Kashamu was a wanted man at the United States for drug trafficking and therefore had no business being a leader in a zone where he (Obasanjo) also comes from.
He also accused the President of reneging on the promise he alleged was made to him by President Jonathan whom he said promised that he was not going to seek a second tenure and therefore described Jonathan’s re-election bid as a ploy to elongate his (Jonathan’s) tenure. When asked by newsmen why he decided to take the approach of publicly criticizing the President, Obasanjo said he had no choice but to make his letter public because he had met the President privately on many occasions but his advice was not adhered to.
The relationship between the duo kept deteriorating to the extent that when President Jonathan sought to make peace with Obasanjo, he reportedly enlisted the support of Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God and Bishop David Oyedepo, the founder of Living Faith Church (aka Winners chapel) to be present at the meeting.
At the meeting which reportedly took place at the residence of the former President, in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Obasanjo among other issues was said to have questioned President Jonathan on why he has allowed Kashamu who he has consistently accused of being a drug trafficker to remain a leader in the PDP. He was reported to have also asked the President why he allegedly allowed two former militants, Asari Dokubo and Government (Tompolo) to acquire war ships on behalf of the government.
While many mused at what could have broken down the relationship between the two leaders, some party stalwarts alleged that Obasanjo was aggrieved because he felt he had lost control and influence over the President and was being sidelined in the scheme of things. Some also alleged that Obasanjo insisted that President Jonathan should not seek re-election because he(Obasanjo) was working behind the scene to ensure the emergence of the governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido as the presidential candidate of the party.
But when many thought that the tension between the two leaders had reduced, Obasanjo sprang another surprise. He recently announced his exit from the PDP at a news conference in his Abeokuta residence in Ogun State when members from his ward paid him a visit. Obasanjo was said to have made the decision to dump his party to preempt his planned suspension by the Ogun State executive of the PDP.
He tore his membership card into shreds, saying he would no longer want to be part of a political party that would destroy the country, but would henceforth prefer to remain an elder statesman. Shortly after Obasanjo’s card was torn, his ward members burst into songs of praise.
As expected, his action drew reactions from the polity. The Ogun State chapter of the PDP said it had already expelled the former President from its fold and as such, he had lost all rights, privileges and respect of members of the party. The party chairman, Bayo Dayo, said there had been series of complaints from his (Obasanjo’s) ward concerning his involvement in anti-party activities. He said, “Following series of unabated anti-party activities unbecoming of a highly celebrated party member, the totality of the executive, leaders and members of the PDP state that Chief Olusegun Obasanjo stands expelled and excommunicated from the party, thereby losing all rights, previous privileges and respect of our teeming party members.
The Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees, Chief Tony Anenih said that the party would not miss the former President. He said Obasanjo had the right to leave the party and has the right to join any party. The governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, said Obasanjo’s exit was a good omen for the party. According to him, “his departure is inglorious and we will never miss him. Now the PDP can sleep with two eyes closed because the lion among our brethren, the tormentor of Nigeria just departed our party.”
A former governor of the old Oyo State, Dr. Omololu Olunoyo said Obasanjo was free to do whatever he wants and was entitled to take personal decisions and had reasons for his decisions. “Obasanjo is old enough to know what he wants, take personal decisions and stand by those decisions” he said.
The chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Oyo State, Kazem Gbadamosi said that constitutionally, every man has a right to join an association and be part of that association. So, joining an association is voluntary and opting out too is voluntary
The Director, Strategic Communications for the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Organisation, Mr. Dele Alake, said opinions may differ on the role of Obasanjo in the history of the country, but that it will be foolhardy to trivialise the contributions of a man who has been fortunate to govern this country for a total period of 11 years. “Certainly, a great gift of introspection and intuition comes from the occupation of the highest office in the land by such a person. Add to this, an international track record in peace-keeping and conflict mediation, one should fairly and honestly accord former President Obasanjo the actual weight of his recent commentary on the Peoples Democratic Party’s design for our country” he said.

are a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), what are the chances of the APC winning the February 14, general election?
PDP is a conservative party. The slight benefit that the masses have enjoyed was during the Buhari administration because at that time, there was price control and discipline. If you are able to discipline the conservatives in Nigeria, Nigeria will be good. The problems in Nigeria are from the conservatives and people are reacting to it. Fela had sung about how Nigerians are suffering.
Whenever the conservatives mess up governance, it is always the progressives that bear the brunt. A good percentage of acquired wealth in Nigeria is through corruption. The rich are getting richer and the poor getting poorer. The masses have been crying in silence. People are not getting the benefits of oil. There is no light, yet electricity tarif is being increased. People are suffering.
Everything about Buhari is about discipline. Buhari would win the election because Nigerians are now asking for change. We have gone beyond the stage that we will not go back. People are now coming out to say there should be a change. Buhari has become a symbol. He is a symbol of revolution in the minds of the people. He understands how to move the country forward
The conservatives have been destroying any parties that could destroy them but APC took them unawares. More people are joining the party. It is becoming more apparent to the people that Buhari will win the election
What about the power of incumbency?
Which incumbency? The problem PDP has now is that if they try to stop it, it will be dis ruptive. Take Governor Rochas Okorocha for example who won the election on the power of the youths.
INEC tried to manipulate the result but the people rejected it. The momentum has picked up now. Anywhere Buhari goes, he is treated like a pop star. Nigeria was a land of no hope but there is hope now. Even the youths who did not know Buhari now know him, so he has become the Mahatma Ghandi of Nigeria.
There are allegations that INEC is trying to frustrate the electorate by deliberately withholding some Permanent Voter Cards (PVC)
That is what they did in Anambra State and Ekiti State and they got the wrath of the people. Some people couldn’t find their name but it got out of hand. They wanted PDP to have higher votes but they miscalculated. This thing can snowball into riot. INEC could be torn into pieces.
The South -South people have been saying that Jonathan should be allowed to complete eight years in the interest of equality. Does that excuse hold water?
That is the trick of PDP. Zoning was a PDP policy not Nigeria’s policy. They ran into trouble because the policy did not work for them later. They looked for ways to get around it when Yar’Adua died. They didn’t allow the northerners to complete eight years after Yar’Adua died, so they are just trying to preach what did not practise.
Does APC have the wherewithal or credibility to rule Nigeria?
Is APC not doing well in Lagos? Their rule is symbolic and has finesse. Since they have done it successfully at the state level, they should go and do it at the larger scale. If we had Awolowo to become president, he would have taught us how to manage our resources. Buhari is that type of person. He managed the country well when he was military Head of state. He has been rejecting unnecessary largesse from the government.
You are the coordinator for the South East group of Buhari campaign organisation, are you confident that Buhari will win in the South East?
Buhari will win in Imo State and Anambra State. It will be 50-50 in other states in South East. He will win in South West, North East and North West. Anybody who votes against Buhari will regret it.
But one would have expected that the Igbos should be campaigning for an Igbo presidency rather than supporting a northerner?
Yes but the time is not now. The thing went bad before but now they have to be in a position that will make t easy for them to produce president. PDP is made up of selfish people but APC offers a good platform for Igbos to produce president.
What if APC does not win, do you see any violence happening?
No, but Nigeria will not be the same again because many things would have been changed. The gap between APC and PDP would no longer be much. PDP are jittery now, they have conducted survey and know that APC will win. Nigerian voters are more aware of the situation now that before. We now have more educated voting population.
Do you see APC maintaining its stronghold on Lagos with the emergence of a popular candidate like Jimi Agbaje who is of PDP?
What is special about Agbaje? What will he do that will surpass what APC has been doing? There are now infrastructures in Lagos State. Many states have poor internally generated Revenue (IGR) but Lagos State is okay because of good management and increased IGR. So, APC will still win Lagos State.

Top on the list of demands is the immediate refund of the campaign funds expended by the members who were denied tickets by their state governors, after paying for the party tickets and mobilising their supporters for the controversial primaries, which they claimed were manipulated by governors and top party leaders to favour their cronies.
The aggrieved lawmakers, many of who will be contesting their popularity at the polls on the same day with Jonathan, also demanded that the president should urgently intervene by directing the party under his leadership to take over their campaign sponsorship, having emerged as candidates of the party.
But in doing so, the lawmakers strongly advised the President not to channel such funding through the party’s National Working Committee, NWC, or their state governors but to make it directly to those contesting election on the same day with him.
The argument of the lawmakers is that their campaigns should have been taken over from the date they emerged victorious at the primaries instead of allowing them to suffer on their own in the name of the party.
The lawmakers, made up of those who managed to secure re-election ticket and those who lost out during the controversial primaries conducted by the ruling party last December, tabled their grievances before Jonathan at a no-holds-barred meeting called by the President at the Presidential Villa, weekend.
Vanguard learnt from numerous sources that no fewer than 104 PDP lawmakers attended the crucial meeting, which afforded them the opportunity for the first time to present misgivings against the party and its leaders at the state and national levels before Jonathan, who is the national leader of the party.
